Professor Philip Chiu is currently Associate Professor of Department of Surgery, Institute of Digestive Disease, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Dr. Chiu graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1994 with two scholarships. He received his surgical training in Department of Surgery, Prince of Wales Hospital and United Christian Hospital, Hong Kong. During his training, he won the bronze prize of the best original research by trainee, Hong Kong Academy of Medicine. He became the fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine in 2001. He achieved a doctorial degree (M.D.) at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2009. He also served the College of Surgeons of Hong Kong as deputy director of Department of Standard.
Dr. Chiu received his overseas training under Professor H Inoue, Yokohama on endoscopic diagnosis and treatment of early gastric and esophageal cancer in 2003. Dr. Chiu was the first to perform endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for treatment of early GI cancers in Hong Kong. Recently he is also the first to perform Per-oral Endoscopic Myotomy (P.O.E.M.), a novel N.O.T.E.S. procedure outside Japan. His research interests include upper gastrointestinal bleeding, esophageal cancer and thoracoscopic esophagectomy, novel endoscopic technologies of diagnosing early GI cancers, ESD, application of Eagle Claw and the development of Natural Orifices Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES). He is a council member of the Hong Kong Society of Digestive Endoscopy, Hong Kong Society of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons and a member of the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. He received the NOSCAR covidien grant in 2008 for his research on Transgastric Endoscopic Gastrojejunostomy. He served as peer reviewer for numerous journals including Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and Endoscopy, and he was awarded outstanding reviewer for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy in 2008. Serving as a member of the team led by Prof. Joseph Sung, he was awarded State Scientific Technology and Progress Award by the State Council of the People’s Republic of China in 2008. He was awarded the prestigious GB Ong travelling fellowship for surgeons in 2010.
