Observe Toilet Hygiene and Stay Healthy
Sanitation is a real issue amid the prevailing health scares. With experts warning that germs and viruses can be transmitted through toilet pipes, it is time to redouble our efforts to disinfect toilet waste. On hand to assist is a new machine developed by HKPC - the Toilet Waste Disinfection System (TWDS).

Immediately after a toilet is flushed, the TWDS releases a very high dose of disinfectants into the toilet discharge to kill the germs within seconds, reducing the risk of disease transmission through toilet sewage. The system consists of a sensor to detect flushing, a disinfectant-dosing device, dosing pipelines and a disinfectant injector.

A pilot unit installed at Princess Margaret Hospital showed remarkable performance, with test results indicating that the TWDS can kill 99.999% of the E. coli population in the sewage within 5 seconds. TWDSs have now been installed in over 200 isolation ward toilets at the Princess Margaret Hospital, Prince of Wales Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Building on the design of TWDS, HKPC has also developed a Handy Toilet Waste Disinfection System (HTWDS), which is even more convenient to use and especially suitable for healthcare institutions such as hospitals, clinics and healthcare centres. In the second half of 2006, HTWDSs will be installed in about 100 toilets in a new infectious disease block at the Prince Margaret Hospital.
