Either on a pallet or in a container, boxes should be arranged in such a way as to maximize space usage. Traditionally, such arrangement is carried out by workers based on their experience. But the process takes time and may not result in the most cost-effective solution.

Now, help is on hand. HKPC has designed a computer programme known as "Packaging Design Wizard – Pallet Loading and Container Optimization" to work out the optimal loading patterns for containers. It provides speedily the best product packing methods and container optimization solutions to help enhance logistical efficiency and reduce transportation costs. The system also comes with an interactive tool for result visualization.

The programme is part of a user-friendly Knowledge-Based Engineering Design System developed by HKPC. Conducted in 2003, the project was supported by the Innovation and Technology Commission of HKSAR Government, the Hong Kong Electrical Appliances Manufacturers Association (HKEAMA) and various local electrical appliances manufacturers.
