Membrane Bioreactor Technology (MBR) Purifies Wastewater from Beverage Production

Vitasoy International Holdings Limited
Industry: Food & Healthcare Devices
Client's Profile
Established in 1940, Vitasoy International Holdings Ltd is one of the largest beverage producers and distributors in Hong Kong. The Group's two leading brands are VITASOY and VITA.
Client's Needs
The client operates a beverage factory in Tuen Mun, New Territories. It has a wastewater treatment plant (WTP) for treating waste liquid before its discharge to public sewers.
The client wished to enhance the WTP system to further improve its wastewater treatment.
Preliminary studies showed that there was room for improvement in the WTP's treatment of soluble organic substances.
HKPC's Services/Solutions
HKPC obtained information on the quantity and flowing pattern of the wastewater, and collected samples for laboratory analysis to identify the best treatment method.
The MBR was found to be the most cost-effective solution to address this problem.
The MBR uses just one-fifth of the space required by conventional biological systems, overcoming the space limitations of the client's factory.
HKPC conducted an on-site pilot test to demonstrate results of the treatment. The operating costs were acceptable to the client.
The project schedule was very tight and HKPC completed the design and installation of a full-scale MBR system within 10 months.
Productivity Achievements
With the installation of the MBR system, the client has achieved its objective to further improve the WTP's soluble organic substance treatment under space constraints.
The client is now considering the possibility of recycling the effluent.
