Computer-aided Design Improves Jewellery Design Process and Cost Estimation

Octagon Jewellery Company Limited
Industry : Jewellery
Client's Profile
Founded in 1987, Octagon Jewellery Company Limited is a leading local jeweller specializing in the design and manufacturing of platinum and 18K gold jewellery set with diamonds and gemstones.
Client's Needs
From design to prototype, jewellery production relies heavily on the experience of the craftsman, making it difficult to control the processing time and cost. The client wished to improve the design and prototyping processes, thereby lowering the cost of product development.
HKPC's Services/Solutions
The Hong Kong Jewelry Manufacturers' Association and HKPC collaborated on the "Development of Parametric Based Jewelry Component CAD Database".
Octagon participated in the pilot project and provided data for the development of the software.
The database was divided into different categories: basic jewellery components, gemstones, jewellery products for women, jewellery products for men, and computerized modeling, colouring and animation databases.
The designer could undertake real-time adjustments on materials and colours on the computer. With accurate calculations processed by the computer, the design comes very close to that of a craftsman's.
Productivity Achievements
It used to take five weeks to produce a ring from design to sample making. With the parametric system, the process is shortened by two weeks. In the case of necklaces, more time saving can be achieved.
Since the system can accurately calculate the amount of materials needed, it helps the Company to control the production cost more effectively.
"It used to take five weeks to produce a ring starting from design. This also covers the time needed for amending any discrepancies between the prototype and the original design. With the new parametric system, the process is shortened by two weeks. It has also become easier to control the cost."
