Project Period:

April 2004 – November 2005

Details on the partnership:

Joining of spectacle components is crucial in the production of eyewear. A 20-month project was undertaken by the Hong Kong Optical Manufacturers Association and implemented by HKPC to explore the feasibility of using advanced technologies on joining new materials, especially titanium and plastics.

Under this project, HKPC is responsible for the consolidation of technologies currently available in the industry and for conducting tests on various material properties to identify the best combination of materials for welding purposes. The microstructure, heating condition, heat-affected zones, joint designs and joining agents will also be analyzed.

The project deliverables will include critical parameters, welding conditions and techniques for joining various novel materials. A set of guidelines will also be distributed on CD-ROMs to illustrate the technology developed.
