2005 Survey on Application of Linux in Hong Kong
Name of Survey:
2005 Survey on Application of Linux in Hong Kong
Survey Background:
Linux is the fastest growing operating system in the market with applications spanning both public and private sectors. Offering an easy access to the adoption of information technology (IT) by business and community users alike, Linux has facilitated the development of IT products and services. With funding support from the SME Development Fund of the Hong Kong SAR Government, HKPC conducted a survey from December 2004 to March 2005 to study the adoption of Linux in Hong Kong.
Survey Objectives:
To understand user requirements on Linux software, such as the types of software tools required, difficulties and future plans in adopting Linux
Funding Organization / Implementation Agent:
Funded by the SME Development Fund of the HKSAR Government, the survey was jointly conducted by the Hong Kong Productivity Council and Linux Resources Centre
Conducted Period:
December 2004 – March 2005
Sample Size & Methodology:
188 local SMEs who had either adopted Linux or had plans to adopt Linux were interviewed
Highlights of the Survey Findings (March 2005):
The survey found that local SMEs were only in the initial phase of Linux adoption. For those who had adopted Linux, 50% said that Linux only accounted for less than 10% of their application software, while more than half said that their Linux-related IT investments were less than 5% of the total.
The lack of technical know-how and professional support in solving operational problems, as well as software and hardware compatibility were the main difficulties cited by SMEs in Linux adoption.
The most popular types of Linux applications were operating system (70%), web/application server (62%), system administration (bootloader) (54%), eMail server (54%) and file/printer server (54%).
