Hong Kong Software Industry Survey
Survey Background:
Initiated by HKPC in 1994, the Hong Kong Software Industry Survey is conducted annually to assess the development of the local software industry.
Survey Objectives:
Examine the manpower of independent software vendors (ISVs) in Hong Kong and their skill requirements
Investigate ISVs' annual turnover and their spending on IT equipment and R&D
Understand the types of software and services specialized, along with the major industries and geographic markets served
Identify the primary difficulties encountered in doing business in Hong Kong, Mainland China and overseas countries
Assess the key business opportunities with respect to applications and services in the coming 12 months
Explore the utilization of IT manpower and market opportunities in Mainland China
Analyze the latest market trends as well as the infrastructure needed to support the future development of the local software industry
Funding Organization / Implementation Agent:
The Survey is funded by the Commerce, Industry and Technology Bureau of the HKSAR Government and HKPC is the implementation agent.

Annual surveys (since 1994)
Latest survey (October 2003 - January 2004)
Sample Size & Methodology:
A total of 150 ISVs were interviewed by telephone during the survey period.
Highlights of the Survey Findings (January 2004):
Over half of the ISVs surveyed (56%) had 1-10 full-time staff working in Hong Kong in 2003 while 20% had 11-20 employees. Local staff size was projected to grow by 6.8% over the next twelve months.
'Computer programming and consultant services' (62.7%), 'in-house developed packaged software' (57.3%) and 'system integration/implementation' (50.7%) were the major types of IT services offered by the ISVs.
ERP (23.6%), finance/accounting (21.5%) and Internet/intranet/extranet (20.8%) were the top three applications provided by the ISVs.
"Small domestic market" (30%), "keen competition on similar products" (26.7%) and "high operation cost" (22%) were the major difficulties encountered by the surveyed ISVs in doing business in Hong Kong.
For those interested in doing business in Mainland China, "unfamiliar with the legal environment" and "entry barriers" were cited as their major difficulties.
Manpower utilization in Mainland China is expected to rise by 16.9% in the coming 12 months.
