Study on Hong Kong Digital Entertainment Industry
Survey Background:
The Commerce, Industry and Technology Bureau of the HKSAR Government commissioned the Hong Kong Productivity Council to conduct a study to examine the development of the local digital entertainment industry and find out the support needed to facilitate future advancement.
Survey Objectives:
To examine the local digital entertainment industry regarding its demographics, concerns, difficulties and market opportunities.
Funding Organization / Implementation Agent:
The Survey was funded by the Commerce, Industry and Technology Bureau of the HKSAR Government and HKPC was the implementation agent.
Survey Period:
March and April 2004
Sample Size & Methodology:
Both face-to-face and telephone interviews were conducted with the target respondents. A total of 57 respondents were interviewed from March to April 2004.
Highlights of the Survey Findings (April 2004):
The majority of the respondents anticipated a good business outlook, with almost 40% of the respondents forecasting growth of more than 30% in 2004/05.
Close to 40% of the respondents will employ more staff, with 6% expecting to hire more than 10 staff in 2004/05.
83% of the respondents did not only derive business from the local market, but also diversified their business to a number of regions:
* 39% - mainland China
* 32% - Taiwan
* 21% - USA
The Mainland (51%) was targeted as the key market for business expansion, followed by Japan (23%) and Korea (21%).
Among the respondents engaging in the digital entertainment business, 37% generated revenues of less than HK$0.5m; 65% employed less than 10 staff in Hong Kong; 46% had been established for less than 3 years.
