HK-INC Explores Road Ahead for Toys Industry

The “Hong Kong Industry Network Clusters” (HK-INC), established by the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC), held a consultation session today (15 July 2011) to explore the challenges, new opportunities and development strategies for Hong Kong’s toys industry.

Addressing the meeting, Mrs Agnes Mak, Executive Director of HKPC, said, “The toys industry is one of Hong Kong’s oldest and largest export sectors. Though Hong Kong stands as the second largest toys exporter in the world, the industry is facing severe challenges in recent years due to labour shortages, changing regulations, Renminbi appreciation, rising costs, tightening bank lending, and tougher safety requirements on toys import to the US and EU.”

“At the meeting, we explored the possible development strategies for the toys industry, in particular, domestic sales opportunities on the Mainland with a market of 250 million children. There were also fruitful exchanges on ways to strengthen its competitiveness. These include green product design, product development, application of advanced technologies for brand building, cleaner production, automation, as well as raising quality with product testing. We will summarize the comments expressed by the industry and communicate with the Government to help facilitate the formulation of strategies and services to meet their needs,” she added.

Held regularly, the theme-based HK-INC aims to gauge the views of industry on issues of relevance to their long-term development. Previous meetings on domestic sales, Guangzhou-Hong Kong cooperation, business inheritance and sustainability, as well as on industry sectors including environmental, creative, watch, information and communication technology, and critical components, were convened with participants from the Government, trade and industry organizations, business and SME associations.
