Circularity Research Centre

The Circularity Research Centre is a pioneering institution dedicated to advancing sustainable development and circular economy strategies in Hong Kong. It encompasses two specialized laboratories: the Circular Innovation Laboratory and the Green Materials Development Laboratory.

Circular Innovation Laboratory

The Circular Innovation Laboratory (CIL) is a core unit under the Circularity Research Centre, dedicated to fostering innovation and accelerating the adoption of circular economy principles in Hong Kong. The lab is committed to developing advanced green technologies and solutions that address pressing environmental and industrial challenges, while enhancing productivity and sustainability across sectors.

Through cutting-edge research and collaboration with industry partners, the CIL drives the transformation of waste into valuable resources and supports Hong Kong’s journey toward achieving its circular economy and dual carbon goals. Key initiatives include:

  • The recovery of precious metals from spent lithium batteries;
  • The development of waste pyrolysis technologies for fuel oil production, and;
  • The advancement of green hydrogen and methanol solutions to promote a low-carbon energy future and establish Hong Kong as a leading green shipping hub.

Green Materials Development Laboratory

The Green Materials Development Laboratory (GMDL) is a modern testing and R&D facility that provides comprehensive testing services. Equipped with advanced instruments, GMDL offers services such as polymer testing, advanced biodegradation tests, and materials identification (e.g., Testing applicable to register tableware in “Green Tableware Platform”) . The lab also provides tailored R&D services for SMEs in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area, focusing on developing novel green materials for sustainable applications and combating climate change.

Current research interests and projects include:

  • Novel materials for accelerating degradation of polyesters and the upcycling of polyesters.
  • Development of energy storage materials and radiative cooling materials for energy-saving applications.
  • Alternative materials to plastic using renewable feedstocks.
