Automation, digitalisation and artificial intelligence within our production lines will improve efficiency, and help corporate decision makers develop better strategies for their resources and investments. The integration of artificial intelligence, robots, the Internet of Things and big data has led to what we refer to as "Industry 4.0”.
With the use of innovation and technology, Hong Kong will be able to develop more advancements in the manufacturing industry. The high value-adding procedures will help the industry community to realise reindustralisation, and facilitate further rapid development in the manufacturing sector.
Additive manufacturing is a revolutionary industrial process, to create an object by adding materials layer by layer without moulding, which helps streamline process and production cycle. It offers a flexible and effective solution for “high-variety, low-volume” production. This process not only suitable for the production of prototypes, moulds and parts, but also applicable for the direct manufacturing of end products.
Over the years, the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) and its Automotive Platforms and Application Systems (APAS) R&D Centre has been striving to undertake different R&D programmes to enhance the competitiveness of the local automotive parts and accessory systems industry. Besides, APAS also aims at to commercialise R&D results, to promote the development of the industry, and to help Hong Kong companies explore new business opportunities arising from smart mobility.
One of the most important elements of “reindustrialisation” is to assist existing manufacturing industries with adopting smart and clean production, to minimise impacts on the environment. Cleaner production is an investment not an expense. Reducing the pollution from source can enhance energy efficiency and bring economic benefits to businesses.
Ageing has a significant impact to the living quality of all of us. Advanced technology today can help solve problems in the everyday lives for the elderly, and provide an environment that is healthy, comfortable and safe for them. In light of this, the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) has initiated Hong Kong’s first GeronTech Cluster, named GLink. With its aim to facilitate exchange of information among industry practitioners, strengthen the development of GeronTech and promote smart ageing in the community, GLink has allied with industry and community stakeholders with common goal on this topic.
According to the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED), sustainability was defined as development that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs, aiming to harmonise three core elements: economic growth, social inclusion and environmental protection.
