HKPC Partners with Hong Kong Enterprises to Innovate for a Smart Future

(Hong Kong, 5 November 2018) The Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) partners together with its industry peers and clients to navigate through the uncertain economic environment, while enhancing its service offerings to provide timely and relevant support to Hong Kong's enterprises in order to innovate for a smart future.

Mr Willy Lin, Chairman of HKPC shared in his message published in the HKPC 2017/18 Annual Report, tabled earlier at the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, that "Regional or global market turbulences will certainly ripple Hong Kong's small and open economy. To withstand the volatility, our industries have to explore diverse and emerging markets through regional partnerships such as the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area (the Greater Bay Area)."

"Beside market diversification, reindustrialisation also helps strengthen the resilience of our economy against external shocks. Given Hong Kong's traditional manufacturing knowhow and quality standards, Hong Kong has the potential for developing high value-added, less land-intensive and labour-intensive manufacturing industries based on new technologies and digital manufacturing," Lam added.

Under the theme of "Innovate for a Smart Future", the HKPC 2017/18 Annual Report outlined HKPC's exciting new initiatives during the year to foster the adoption of Industry 4.0 (i4.0) and a culture of innovation in Hong Kong, among its continuous efforts to provide focused technology and business process support to Hong Kong industries, especially programmes for SMEs.

Mr Mohamed D. Butt, Executive Director of HKPC who joined the organisation in December 2017, said, "Under my helmsmanship, HKPC's business strategy will build on the Smart City and Digital Manufacturing concepts to pursue services under market-led and industry-centric strategic themes; focus on i4.0 as HKPC's signature support to industry and the enabler to drive reindustrialisation and innovation; and complement HKSAR Government policy and initiatives in the areas of reindustrialisation, innovation and technology, and the Greater Bay Area development."

In 2017/18, HKPC launched the "Smart Industry One", "Smart Industry One Consortium", Hong Kong's first Professional Diploma Programme in i4.0 and "Inno Space". To further enhance the innovation capability of Hong Kong's enterprises, it also geared up to establish the INC Invention Centre (The Hatch) with the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology from Germany. The Hatch has been in full operations since mid-October 2018.

Other major highlights included the upgrading of HKPC's Productivity Training Institute to the HKPC Academy, offering Hong Kong's only consultancy services for businesses to set up their own academies to achieve systematic and sustainable talent development. The establishment of the HKPC Shenzhen Innovation and Technology Centre in Futian, Shenzhen helps the Hong Kong enterprises explore opportunities for collaboration in the Greater Bay Area.

In 2017/18, HKPC successfully attained the budget targets in all key financial performance indicators. A total of 699 consultancy projects were undertaken in the year, and achieved an average score of 8.99 out of 10 from customer satisfaction surveys.
