HKPC Inventions Won First 5 Awards at Silicon Valley International Invention Festival

(Hong Kong, 16 July 2019) Applied R&D innovations developed by the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) received international accolades once again. Three HKPC inventions won first five awards at Silicon Valley International Invention Festival (SVIIF) held in the United State. HKPC also achieved an encouraging result at Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area High Value Patent Portfolio Contest 2019 that an innovative environmental invention has been ranked top 50.

The High Pressure Food Processing System for Packaged Food (HPP) developed by HKPC received three medals at SVIIF, including Gold Medal with the Congratulations of the Jury; Gold Medal from Beijing Online Invention; and China Association of Inventions (CAI) Award - Invention & Innovation. HPP can utilise ultra-high pressure at room temperature for sterilisation, thereby preserving the original taste and extending the shelf life of the food by up to 10 times, without reliance on low temperature preservation. This can save the cost and energy consumption on cold chain logistics and food storage.

Following the Gold Award of the Hong Kong ICT Awards 2019 – Smart Mobility Award (Smart Transportation Stream) and the Honorable Mention Prize of the Chinese Delegation for Invention and Innovation as well as a Gold Medal with Congratulations of the Jury at the 47th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva, the intelligent robotic system, which was co-invented and built by the Highways Department (HyD) and HKPC, won a Gold Medal at SVIIF.

In addition, Smart Safety Seat Belt, also developed by HKPC, won a silver medal. The Smart Safety Seat Belt embedded with sensors to monitor the driver’s physiological signals throughout the journey. If drowsiness is detected, alarms will be issued in the form of sound, voice, flash light or vibration to alert the driver to ensure safety.

The annual SVIIF held at end-June this year attracted exhibitors from around the globe, presented approximately 600 inventions, with expert judges selecting outstanding innovations among the exhibits.

On the other hand, the Food Waste Total Recycling System (FWTR) developed by HKPC ranked top 50 of the first Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area High Value Patent Portfolio Contest 2019, a large-scaled competition that draws much public attention recently. FWTR can fully convert the organic fraction of food waste into products or materials with market value: high purity biogas, quality waste oil for biodiesel production and eco fish feed. In near future, FWTR has potential to be introduced to local restaurants for reducing the pressure on landfills and converting food waste into valuable materials.

Last year, FWTR won renowned international accolades at the Institute of Chemical Engineering (IChemE) Global Award 2018, and named the “Highly Commended” commendation as well as the First-Runner-Up in both Sustainability and Energy Categories among 100 plus finalists from various regions.
