(Hong Kong, 4 April 2019) Applied R&D innovations developed by the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) have won two accolades at the “Hong Kong ICT Awards 2019 – Smart Mobility Award”. These included a Gold Award in Smart Transportation category for “RoadBot 1” and a Silver in Smart Tourism category for “QPoint App”. The awards presentation ceremony was held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre today.
Mr Mohamed Butt, Executive Director of HKPC, said, “It is encouraging that HKPC innovations have garnered awards at the ‘ICT Awards 2019’. This is indeed a recognition to the capability of local R&D talents who care about the concerns and demands of the public and industry, and are committed to developing tailor-made solutions. HKPC will continue to leverage its over 50 years of interdisciplinary technical knowledge and experience for the development of more applied R&D solutions to tackle ‘pain points’ of enterprises, and drive forth the development of ‘Smart City’ in Hong Kong.”
Driven by the Highways Department of the HKSAR Government and co-invented with HKPC, RoadBot 1 is the world’s first fully-automated traffic cone, warning lantern placement and collection system. Fitted with cameras, LiDAR sensors and robotic arms, it uses the Sensors Fusion Real-time Processing Algorithm to recognise traffic cones and warning lanterns, and analyse the road situation to calculate their precise placement and collection which will be performed by the robotic arms. With RoadBot 1, road maintenance workers can stay off the road for longer period, lowering the risk of accidents and enhancing the protection of the workers.
Jointly developed by the Quality Tourism Services Association, Cherrypicks and HKPC, QPoint App captures various types of big data such as footfall traffic, consumer behaviour, tourist movements and behaviours, etc. Based on the data collected, the app users can receive personalised and location-based shopping and dining offers and information from QPoint while member merchants of the apps can formulate better sale strategies to generate more businesses.
