HKPC Helps Hong Kong Manufacturers Gear up for Industry 4.0

Hong Kong manufacturers should migrate towards “Industry 4.0” to meet rising demands for customized smart products and services, Mr Victor Ng, Deputy Chairman of the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC), told a packed International Conference on “Industry 4.0” which opens today (26 July 2016).

Organized by HKPC and funded by the Innovation and Technology Fund of the HKSAR Government, the Conference and three Smart seminars that follow present the implementation strategies, latest enabling technologies and business opportunities of the fourth industrial revolution, more commonly known as “Industry 4.0”. The event was opened by Mr Nicholas Yang, Secretary for Innovation and Technology of the HKSAR Government.

Speaking at the opening, Mr Ng said, “As more and more overseas clients are engaged in the trend of intelligent production and data exchange, they also include more and more ‘Industry 4.0’ elements into their supplier requirements. To address the market trend of product and service customization, local manufacturers must step into high gear to close the gap with ‘Industry 4.0’. They need to integrate their various information and production systems, link up data, resources, process, and services to take full advantage of ‘Industry 4.0’.”

First of its kind in Asia, the three-day event comprises a conference featuring leading “Industry 4.0” experts from mainland China, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea and the United States; and three seminars shedding light on the new business models in “Smart Manufacturing”, “Smart Product” and “Smart Services”.

Industry innovation solutions of HKPC and its smart technology partners were also displayed at the Conference today, including the “Cyber Physical Production System” which utilizes various smart factory technologies such as flexible manufacturing, 3D printing, virtualization and human-machine interfacing; wireless “Smart Meter” to monitor energy consumption of different devices; “Intelligent Planning and Scheduling System” to achieve automated optimal resource management in future factories; and a “Digital Factory” with enabling sensors, systems and data analytics.

To promote “Industry 4.0” adoption in Hong Kong, earlier HKPC has set up the Intelligent Manufacturing Technology Demonstration Centre, 3D Printing One and RoboticsOne support centres to demonstrate some of the “Industry 4.0” enabling technologies. It has also built up a pool of certified trainers and experts to support local manufacturers in making the transition to the smart regime. A new facility, ‘Smart Industry One’, is also in the pipeline to showcase the smart operation and factory of the future.
