Partnering for a Smart Future - HKPC Celebrates 50th Anniversary

For the past 50 years, the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) has played a pivotal role in Hong Kong’s industry support infrastructure, focusing on developing and transferring new technologies and management knowhow to enhance the competitiveness and sustainability of Hong Kong industries in the world market.

Celebrating its golden jubilee this year, HKPC today (14 February 2017) unveiled its 50th anniversary commemorative programme under the theme of “Partnering for a Smart Future”. Mr Nicholas Yang, Secretary for Innovation and Technology of the HKSAR Government, was the guest-of-honour at the launching ceremony, accompanied by officiating guests Mr Tan Tieniu, Deputy Director, and Professor Li Lu, Director General of the Education, Science and Technology Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR; Mr Cheuk Wing-Hing, Permanent Secretary for Innovation and Technology; Ms Annie Choi, Commissioner for Innovation and Technology; HKPC Chairman Mr Willy Lin and Executive Director Mrs Agnes Mak.

Mr Lin, said, “For half a century, HKPC has pioneered ‘first-ever’ initiatives for Hong Kong industries. From applied R&D, manufacturing technologies, business systems, environmental management, IT, to testing and certification, we have introduced a host of innovative technologies and knowledge such as 3D printing, smart manufacturing and other critical “Industry 4.0” technologies, to enable local businesses, SMEs in particular, to acquire the necessary technical and management competence for tapping high value-adding markets.”

He continued, “Businesses across the world are now facing challenges of the fourth industrial revolution, and Hong Kong enterprises are also gearing up for ‘Re-industrialization’. In the past few years, HKPC has been honing its technologies and expertise to brace for these changes. Looking to the future, HKPC will move full steam ahead to launch more innovative support services, assisting Hong Kong industries to seize on new business opportunities arising from smart technologies.”

HKPC has formulated a three-pronged strategy of “collaborating with stakeholders”, “focusing on areas of excellence” and “scaling up new platforms” to address the pressing needs of enterprises. Its strategic vision also aims at opening up new horizons for the long-term development of industries.

Highlights of HKPC’s 50th anniversary commemorative programme will include the international conference on “Smart Future: A Global Perspective”, featuring world leading experts and academics on the global trends, latest technologies and implementation experience of smart city, smart industry and smart services; and a world productivity forum, both to be held in the second half of September.

Other initiatives include a dedicated HKPC 50th anniversary website, newspaper series, advertorials, a commemorative publication and mini exhibition for the industries and the public to revisit the history of HKPC, while looking ahead to its future development.

The HKPC golden jubilee logo unveiled today also carries significant meanings. The logo design incorporates the two-toned lines in blue and green of the original emblem that signifies HKPC’s close partnership with Hong Kong industry, while the number “50” resembles the infinity “∞” symbol. The vibrant linear design symbolizes the longstanding and profound relationship between HKPC and the industries, partnering to innovate for change and build a boundless future.
