APAS R&D Centre Showcase Explores New Opportunities in Autonomous Technologies

With "autonomous driving" becoming a reality, the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) and its Automotive Parts and Accessory System (APAS) R&D Centre are strengthening their R&D efforts to help Hong Kong companies explore new business opportunities arising from smart mobility, says Mr Willy Lin, Chairman of HKPC.

Mr Lin made the pledge at the opening of the "APAS R&D Centre Showcase 2018" today (26 July 2018). The Showcase was opened by Dr David Chung, Acting Secretary for Innovation and Technology, and Mr Bryan Ha, Assistant Commissioner for Innovation and Technology (Funding Schemes) of the HKSAR Government. Under the theme of "Autonomous Technology Development", it comprised a technical seminar and an exhibition of APAS R&D Centre's latest R&D results.

Mr Lin said, "As autonomous driving is still in development stage, the Hong Kong industry may wish to explore the immense business opportunities presented in the development of relevant enabling technologies and their new applications. For instance, while the automobile industry develops Internet of Vehicles technologies, other industries may find new opportunities in associated areas ranging from sensor infrastructure equipment and mobile app development, to car insurance services based on big data analysis."

"To help local industries seize such opportunities, APAS has recently acquired its first autonomous-ready vehicle with the support of the Innovation and Technology Commission. It will serve as an R&D platform for these technologies' future local development and application. In addition, HKPC has begun collaboration with the Airport Authority Hong Kong. We have been working on the development and demonstration of intelligent connected vehicle V2X technology at the Hong Kong International Airport," he added.

On top of the autonomous-ready vehicle, winning solutions from the "46th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva" developed by APAS R&D Centre - Portable EV Charger Kit System, Smart Safety Seat Belt, Smart Street Lamp Monitoring System, and Tail Lift Anti-Trapping System; and various EV charging solutions were also displayed at the Showcase.
