APAS and HKAA's trial scheme on "Smart Mobile EV Charger" - offers emergency EV charging solution anytime, anywhere

To help Hong Kong electric vehicle (EV) users stranded on the road without power, the Automotive Parts and Accessory Systems (APAS) R&D Centre of the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) and Hong Kong Automobile Association (HKAA) jointly present the “Smart Mobile EV Charger” Trial Scheme to provide the city’s first emergency roadside EV charging service.

Mr Mohamed D. Butt, Executive Director of HKPC, and Mr Kenneth Ng, President of HKAA, officiated at the launch today (23 March 2018).

Mr Butt said, “Over the years, HKPC’s APAS R&D Centre has engaged in the development of the core technologies and charging facilities of EVs. We are excited to partner with HKAA in introducing the mobilized EV charging solution to its members. It will certainly enhance the awareness of this novel technology and encourage the proliferation of EVs.”

Funded by the Innovation and Technology Fund of the HKSAR Government, APAS R&D Centre co-invented the “Smart Mobile EV Charger” with an industry partner. Unlike traditional fixed EV charging stations which must be connected to the power grid for electricity, the mobilized EV charger – using a lithium battery pack as the EV power source – can be installed easily on a van and taken to different locations across the city to provide emergency EV charging service.

A silver medal winner at the “44th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva”, the system only takes four minutes to give the battery-drained EV an extra 20 kilometre mileage, enabling it to reach the nearest charging station for proper charging.

“The cooperation with HKPC would promote the development of EV charging infrastructure and the wider adoption of EV,” said Mr Ng. “The trial scheme will be launched shortly to provide emergency mobile charging service for HKAA members who are using EV. This will ease EV users’ previous concern on running out of battery.”

To start from April 9, the one-year trial scheme will allow HKAA members to enjoy free mobilized EV charging solution. In addition, they can try out the HKPC-developed 50kW EV Fast Charging Station at HKAA’s Yau Ma Tei office for free.
