HKPC Seminar Explores Latest 5G Technology Trend and Applications

(Hong Kong, 16 May 2019) The Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) today organised the seminar of “A 5G Revolution: What does this mean for me?” with the Hong Kong Wireless Technology Industry Association (WTIA). Aiming to promote the development of 5G technology in Hong Kong and to enable local enterprises to grasp new business opportunities brought by this disruptive technology, representatives from international and local ICT companies and corporate users introduced the latest global trend of 5G technology and related new applications at the event.

Dr Lawrence Cheung, Acting Executive Director of HKPC, said, “The introduction of 5G technology will unleash new possibilities and business opportunities for different industries. With Hong Kong now actively preparing for the launch of 5G network and related services, the industry is expecting 5G deployment to be ready in 2020. As a leading R&D organisation and a trusted partner of the industry, HKPC is looking forward to embrace the 5G era and to join hands with the industry and SMEs in developing disruptive application solutions and business models.”

Mr Roy Law, Chairman of WTIA, said, “5G technology creates a more flexible and open atmosphere for business, at the same time it enables cross-industry cooperation. Despite higher speed, another key feature of 5G is the extremely low latency, which is beneficial to the development of Artificial Intelligence, big data and Internet of Things. Also, 5G favours the development of Industry 4.0, Smart City and Living, Smart Medical or Virtual Reality. All of these bring unprecedented potential for innovative ideas, as well as business development across all industries.”

Featuring guest speakers from international and local ICT companies, including Huawei, ZTE, Cisco, HKT, SmarTone and Hutchison Telecom Hong Kong Holdings; and major corporate ICT users such as the Hong Kong International Airport and MTR Corporation, the seminar has attracted warm response from local enterprises with around 600 people registering for it. Industry representatives and experts exchanged views on the development of 5G technology, including its applications in different aspects and its disruptive impact on the business world.
