Experts from Hong Kong, the Mainland and Overseas Share Experience on IP Management

Over 100 representatives from Hong Kong, Mainland and overseas companies attended a seminar organized by the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) and the Guangdong Provincial Intellectual Property Office (GPIPO) today (1 December 2005) to obtain the latest updates on the trend of intellectual property (IP) management.

Entitled "Worldwide Trend of Innovation Knowledge Enterprise and Experience Sharing on Excellent IP Management", the Seminar aims to enhance the capabilities of Hong Kong and Mainland companies in IP management. Experts from Singapore, Denmark, the Mainland and Hong Kong shared their knowledge and experience on IP management in their respective economies.

The opening ceremony was officiated by Mr K K Yeung, Executive Director of HKPC and Mr Li Zhong Duo, Director General of GPIPO.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr Yeung said, "With the globalization of the world economy and the implementation of CEPA, IP management has taken on increased significance. The flourishing joint venture activities among overseas, Hong Kong and Mainland companies, especially in areas that incur high knowledge and IP contents, have made effective IP management a top priority for business collaborations."

"In addition, for manufacturers making their transformation from original equipment manufacturing (OEM) to original design manufacturing (ODM) or original brand manufacturing (OBM), their capabilities in IP management have also become a critical success factor," said Mr Yeung.

According to Mr Yeung, HKPC has launched numerous initiatives to promote good IP management. "The 'Innovation Knowledge Enterprise Assessment and Award Scheme', launched in 2004, has helped industry and business communities in Hong Kong and the Guangdong Province enhance their capabilities in creating, protecting and capitalizing their intellectual assets," he added. "By recognizing outstanding achievements in IP management, the Scheme also promotes best practices and sets the benchmark for performance."

"In September 2005, HKPC collaborated with the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) on the development of an Intellectual Property Management Protocol (IPMP) to assess the IP management readiness of companies in the Asia Pacific region. Under this collaboration, HKPC and IPOS will jointly develop a mutually recognized system of IP audit, which we hope will eventually serve as a benchmark for the entire Asia Pacific region," he added.

Speakers at the Seminar included Mr Stephen Selby, Director, Intellectual Property Department, HKSAR Government; Mr Yuan You Lou, Director General, GPIPO, Department of Coordination and Administration, PRC; Mr Lian Xibo, Deputy Director, Dongguan City Intellectual Property Bureau, PRC; Mr Wong Sheng Kwai, Assistant Director-General of IPOS; Ms Lone Saaby, Director, Denmark Patent and Tradmark Office; Mr Arnald Ho, Managing Director, Print-Rite Holdings Ltd., and Mr T W Liu, Senior Consultant (CEPA Business Development and IP), HKPC.

The event was co-organized by the Hong Kong Quality Assurance Agency and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
