HKPC Collaborates with Panyu Government to Support Development of Jewellery Industry

The Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) today (2 March 2005) signed a collaboration agreement with the People's Government of Panyu District of Guangzhou to foster development of the jewellery industry in Hong Kong and Panyu which has become a major production base for Hong Kong jewellers.

The signing ceremony was officiated by Mr Li Weitang, Deputy Director of the People’s Government of Panyu District of Guangzhou, and Mr K T Yung, Acting Director (Business Productivity) of HKPC, and witnessed by Mr Li Zhizhen, Deputy Secretary General of Guangzhou Municipal People’s Government and Mr K K Yeung, Executive Director of HKPC.

Under the agreement, HKPC and the Panyu District Government will jointly establish a research and development centre for the jewellery industry in Panyu, organize training on jewellery design and production, as well as promote the adoption of innovative technologies and management systems to enhance the productivity of manufacturers.

According to the Bureau of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation of Panyu District, Guangzhou Municipality, more than 200 Hong Kong enterprises are presently engaged in the jewellery processing business in Panyu, employing over 50,000 local workers.
