HKPC Establishes CEPA Alliance of Professional Financial Services to Help Local Professional Service Providers Explore Business Opportunities in the Mainland

The CEPA Alliance of Professional Financial Services established jointly by the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC), the Law Society of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Venture Capital and Private Equity Association and various leading services providers was officially inaugurated today (31 January 2005).

This is HKPC's latest initiative to facilitate the entry of Hong Kong's professional financial services providers into the Mainland market and introduce their services to potential Mainland users.

Announcing the formation of the Alliance, Mr Joseph Poon, General Manager (CEPA Business Development & IP) of HKPC, said, “The implementation of CEPA has created a two-way need. On the one hand, the Mainland market has been opened up for 18 categories of services to Hong Kong companies. Over the past year, many of our professional services providers have been exploring business opportunities in this lucrative market. On the other hand, as Mainland enterprises expand and strive to strengthen their international presence, they have a growing need for professional services that meet international standards. In particular, overseas financing through various channels plays an important role in their agenda.”

“As the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong SAR pointed out in his recent Policy Address, Hong Kong should seize the opportunities arising from the 'going global' strategy for Mainland enterprises. Over the years, Hong Kong's professional services in finance, stock brokerage, loan and credit, investment and international trade have worked in a milieu that complies with international standards and practices. In addition, our geographical advantage and experience have placed us in an excellent position for the provision of financing channels and listing services for these Mainland companies,” he said.

“Leveraging on the advantageous terms under CEPA, we are confident that the Alliance will help create a win-win situation for both Hong Kong's financial services providers and Mainland enterprises seeking such services, resulting in a synergy that will greatly benefit the economic development of the greater PRD region,” Mr Poon added.

According to Mr Poon, the Alliance will organize a series of promotional events both in Hong Kong and the Mainland. “In the Mainland, the Alliance will organize roadshows for professional financial services, in conjunction with seminars and round-table discussions with Mainland enterprises with potential for public offering, whereas in Hong Kong, it will organize events jointly with various provincial and municipal governments from the Mainland,” he said.

As the first event organized by the Alliance, the 'CEPA Seminar on Legal & Accounting Service and Mutual Recognition of Professional Qualification' was held immediately after the inauguration ceremony.
