HKPC Organizes Quality Management and Six Sigma Convention

More than 250 quality management practitioners attended The 11th Hong Kong Quality Management & 1st Six Sigma Convention jointly organized by the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC), Hong Kong Quality Management Association (HKQMA) and Six Sigma Institute (SSI) today (20 June 2005) at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Under the theme of "World Class Excellence through Quality", the three-day Convention aims to present successful practices in the implementation of Six Sigma, Total Quality Management (TQM), productivity improvement, Quality Circle activities, ISO 9001:2000 and process management, integrated management system, safety and health, environmental protection, Customer Relationship Management (CRM), e-quality and other quality management systems.

The opening ceremony was officiated by Mr Francis Ho, Permanent Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology (Communication and Technology), HKSAR Government; Mr Chen Bang Zhu, President of China Association for Quality, and Mr Weiman Chu, Director (Manufacturing Productivity) of HKPC.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Weiman Chu said, "Quality Circle activities have become an integral part of the quality improvement strategies of manufacturing and services companies in both private and public sectors. The integration of Six Sigma and Quality Circle activities can nurture a culture of innovation and continuous improvement in businesses for the attainment of enhanced customer satisfaction, costs reduction and improved business performance. This Convention provides an ideal knowledge-sharing platform for the exchange of experience and latest information on Six Sigma and quality management for local companies."

"Over the years, HKPC has played a major role in promoting the adoption of quality management systems in both the local and Mainland business communities," continued Mr Chu. "We have collaborated with the China Association for Quality in promoting quality management in the Mainland through participation in the assessment of the China Quality Management Award and organising training for quality management executives on the adoption of the Performance Excellence Model," he said.

Following the opening of the Convention, a presentation ceremony of the Hong Kong Quality Circle (HKQC) Award 2005 and Six Sigma Award 2005 was held where Mr Francis Ho presented the Grand Award of the HKQC Award 2005 and Six Sigma Award 2005 to the Tseung Kwan O Hospital and CLP Power Hong Kong Limited respectively.

Other winning companies of the HKQC Award include CLP Power Hong Kong Limited, The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Ltd, Xun An Engineering Co Ltd and Well Born Real Estate Management Ltd, while Fuji Xerox (Hong Kong) Limited, NOKIA China, MTR Corporation Limited, Salcomp (Shenzhen) Company Limited and DBS Bank (Hong Kong) Limited are winners of other Six Sigma Awards. The successful experience of these winning companies were presented during the Convention.

Other officiating guests at the opening ceremony included Mr Roger Lai, Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services, HKSAR Government; Mr Zhang Yong Sheng, Director & General Manager of China National Aviation Corporation (Hong Kong) Ltd; Mr Gavin Chau of HKQMA; Dr Eric Wong, Organising Committee of The 11th Hong Kong Quality Management & 1st Six Sigma Convention, and Dr Y K Chan, Chairman of SSI.
