HKPC Organizes Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Macao Logistics Forum to Foster Trilateral Collaboration

More than 200 industry practitioners from the logistics sectors in Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Macao today (4 March 2005) attended the ‘Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Macao Logistics Forum’ jointly organized by the Shenzhen Municipal Office of the Leading Group for Logistics Development, Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) and the Bureau of Economy, Macao SAR Government, in Shenzhen.

Aiming to explore the competitive advantages of the three cities’ logistics sectors and identify the areas for co-operation for sustainable development, the Forum featured government officials and industry leaders from the three cities presenting their latest developments in customs and logistics policies and regulations, logistics infrastructure, industry trends and e-logistics technologies. The opening ceremony of the two-day Summit was officiated by Mr Liu Yingli, Vice Mayor of Shenzhen and Mr K K Yeung, Executive Director of HKPC.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr K K Yeung said, “The implementation of CEPA and the Pan-PRD Regional Co-operation Framework Agreement has further strengthened partnership among Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Macao. The trilateral collaboration of the logistics sectors, in particular, is significant to the economic development of the Pan-PRD region.”

Commenting on the prospects of the logistics sector, Mr Yeung said, “As of February 2005, among the 764 applications for the Certificate of Hong Kong Service Supplier received by the Trade and Industry Department of the HKSAR Government, over 45% were from the transport and logistics services. This undoubtedly reflects the flourishing business opportunities for this sector under CEPA. With the opening up of China’s logistics services market according to its WTO commitments, new opportunities as well as challenges for the industry in the three cities are expected.”

“Through this Forum, we hope to provide a platform for synergy building and information exchange, fostering further collaboration among industry players from Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Macao,” he said.

Other speakers from Hong Kong included Ms Alice Lau, Deputy Secretary for Economic Department and Labour, HKSAR Government; Mr Leung Koon-wah, Assistant Commissioner (Boundary and Ports), Customs and Excise Department, HKSAR Government; Mr Raymond Leung, President, and Mr Stephen Ip, Vice President of Hong Kong Logistics Association.
