HKPC Organizes Training and Study Mission on Moulding for Metals and Plastics Industry

To assist local manufacturers to engage in high value-added production, the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) will organize a study mission to Japan on plastics, moulds and related machinery technologies from 24 September to 1 October 2005.

Mr L M Li, General Manager (Manufacturing Technology) of HKPC, said, "Today's sophisticated consumers demand cutting-edge products of high quality. To stay ahead of competitors, Hong Kong manufacturers are shifting their focus to high value-added products, which calls for upgrading of manufacturing and tooling technologies."

Targeting manufacturers of plastic products, moulds and related machinery, the study mission aims to help them keep abreast of the latest market trends and processing technologies. It will include visits to the International Plastic Fair (IPF) as well as factories engaging in the production of plastics, moulds and related machinery.

According to Mr Li, the IPF is one of the three largest plastic technology exhibitions in the world. The fair, held every three years in Japan, will showcase the most advanced plastic processing and recycling machinery, plastic materials, plastic moulds, as well as automation and control accessories.

"Through the on-site visits, participants will also be able to share experience with Japanese experts and other mission members, and to establish business networks and explore business opportunities with Japanese manufacturers," Mr Li added. In addition, a workshop on 'Metal Components Fabrication - Mould Design and Injection Process for Metal Injection Moulding Technology' will be held at the HKPC Building on Monday, 8 August 2005.

According to Dr L K Yeung, General Manager (Material Technology) of HKPC, metal injection moulding is widely used in the mass production of complex components such as titanium and stainless steel medical devices, automotive components, household appliances, computer heat sinks and ceramic nozzles. "This technology is expected to see growing application in Asia," he said.

'"Conducted by experienced materials and machine developers, the workshop will assist engineers and executives to upgrade their technological capabilities and increase the added value of their products." Dr Yeung added.
