HKSI & HKPC Launch Programme to Enhance Competitiveness of Local Artists

To foster creative talents and promote commercial design, the Hong Kong Society of Illustrators (HKSI) today (24 June 2005) launched the 'i.mission - Professional Exchange and Enhancement Programme on Creative Commercial Arts and Design in Hong Kong'.

The Programme is funded by the Professional Services Development Assistance Scheme (PSDAS) of the HKSAR Government, with the Productivity Training Institute (PTI) of the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) as the Implementation Organization, and the internationally renowned movie star Mr Jackie Chan as the Ambassador.

Mr Fei Wong, Chairman of HKSI, said, "At the gateway of China and the crossroads of Asia, Hong Kong as a cosmopolitan city with long exposure to the West is a cauldron of Oriental and Occidental cultures. With international outlooks, our artists possess profound knowledge of both Chinese and Western arts. Combining the best of both worlds, they boast unmatched creativity and originality."

Dr Stephen Lee, Director (Product Productivity) of HKPC, said, "The Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA) between the Mainland and Hong Kong has facilitated the entry of local artists into the Mainland market."

"With their knowledge of international trends and understanding of Chinese culture, Hong Kong illustrators are in the best position to serve Chinese and foreign companies operating on the Mainland. The creative and vivid illustrations from Hong Kong talents can add value to the brands and products of these enterprises, thus boosting their competitiveness."

Targeting local design and illustration professionals, the ten-month programme comprises an industry forum, a study mission to the USA, an exhibition, company visits and training workshops to be held in Hong Kong and overseas. "Through these activities, we hope to give local illustrators and designers insights into global trends, techniques, management skills, copyright issues and challenges in the field," Dr Lee said.

As the first event under this Programme, an eight-day study mission to San Francisco will be held to provide opportunities for the participants to acquire up-to-date information on illustration and exchange knowledge with overseas professionals in the industry. Scheduled from 6-13 July 2005, the study mission will participate in the two-day Illustration Conference (ICON4), the concurrent exhibition and workshops, as well as organize company visits for an interchange of ideas and insights.
