"The First Dongguan-Hong Kong Outstanding Manufacturing Enterprise Award" Recognises Outstanding Achievements of Hong Kong Manufacturers

Fifteen Hong Kong manufacturers were recognised today (1 June 2005) at the presentation ceremony of The First Dongguan-Hong Kong Outstanding Manufacturing Enterprise Award.

The Award Scheme was jointly organised by the Dongguan People's Government and the Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province, with the Dongguan Science and Technology Bureau, the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) and the International Collaboration Division of the Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province as technical organisers.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Mr K K Yeung, Executive Director of HKPC, said, "Over the past two decades, the synergy between Dongguan and Hong Kong has created a win-win situation for both cities. Building from the most basic form of processing operation, Hong Kong enterprises in Dongguan have over the years, established a high-tech, capital intensive and cross-border production system. Today, this model has become a crucial link in the supply chain of world manufacturing."

"The First Dongguan-Hong Kong Outstanding Manufacturing Enterprise Award aims to recognize the contributions and achievements of Hong Kong enterprises in Dongguan and the Pearl River Delta (PRD) at large. Their achievements have set the benchmarks for businesses in both cities, driving further collaboration between Dongguan and Hong Kong to new heights," said Mr Yeung.

Highlighting HKPC's work in facilitating this development, Mr Yeung said, "Through our subsidiary company in Dongguan – the Productivity (Dongguan) Consulting Co., Ltd., HKPC provides integrated support across the value chain of Hong Kong enterprises and their partners in Dongguan, spearheading collaboration in technology and business partnership."

Representing the Judging Panel in summarizing the achievements of the winners, Mr Edmund Sung, Director (Business Productivity) of HKPC, said, "The winners have demonstrated their performance excellence in corporate development, product development and manufacturing technology, management, as well as their contributions to the community."

"Most of the winners have successfully transformed from OEM (original equipment manufacturing) to high value-added ODM (original design manufacturing) and OBM (original brand manufacturing) businesses. Emphasizing product development and technology innovation, they have continuously enhanced their R&D capabilities through partnership with research institutions and partners in the Mainland and overseas. They have also enhanced their competitiveness through the attainment of international standards such as ISO 9000, TS 16949, ISO 14000, OHSAS 18000 and SA 8000. Many of them have already expanded into the Mainland and other international markets."

"For those winning enterprises which are focusing on OEM businesses, they have also displayed relentless efforts in manufacturing technology upgrading. These included the introduction of nano production lines, lead-free soldering, automated optical inspection technology, and other advanced manufacturing systems," he continued.

The winning companies were SAE Magnetics (HK) Limited, Sunray Cave Limited, Sundart Holdings Limited, Holmes Products (Far East) Ltd, Chau Leong Enterprise (Group) Limited, Feng Chuan Tooling Company Limited, Hoi Po Metal Manufactory Company Limited, G.E.W. Corporation Limited, Techtronic Industries Company Limited, Surface Mount Technology Limited, Shing Hing Industrial Limited, Lung Cheong International Holdings Limited, Luen Thai International Group Limited, Modern Metal & Refining Limited, and Pro-Win Machinery Company Limited. In addition, three companies were awarded the Certificates of Merit.

Officiating guests at the ceremony included Mr Leng Xiaoming, Vice Mayor of Dongguan; Mr Ma Xienmin, Vice Director, Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province; Mr Ye Jingtu, Director-General, Dongguan Science and Technology Bureau; Mr Ding Linzhi, Deputy Director-General, Dongguan Science and Technology Bureau; Ms Eliza Lam, Head of Trade Promotion, Hong Kong and Economic Trade Office in Guangdong, HKSAR Government, and other members of the Award's Judging Panel.

After the ceremony, a seminar on high technology, design and green manufacturing in the PRD was held with Government officials and industry experts from Guangdong and Hong Kong as speakers.
