11 Hong Kong Companies Recognized for Excellence in Intellectual Property Management

Eleven Hong Kong companies with outstanding achievements in intellectual property (IP) management were recognized today (19 December 2006) at the presentation ceremony of the Innovation Knowledge (InKnow) Enterprise Award 2006.

Now in its second year, the Award Scheme was jointly organized by the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) and the Guangdong Provincial Intellectual Property Office (GDIPO), with the support of the Intellectual Property Department of the HKSAR Government, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), Hong Kong Quality Assurance Agency (HKQAA), SGS Hong Kong Ltd and the US Chamber of Commerce.

The presentation ceremony was officiated by Mr Xing Shengcai, Deputy Commissioner of State Intellectual Property Office; Mr Li Zhongduo, Director General of GDIPO, and Dr Samson Tam, Deputy Chairman of HKPC.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Tam said, "With innovation being one of the strategic foci under the 11th Five-Year Plan, activities incurring high knowledge and IP contents have taken on increased significance. Hong Kong and Mainland enterprises need to enhance their capabilities in creating, protecting and capitalizing their intellectual assets to add value to their products and services. No doubt, effective IP management is crucial to enterprises in the process of value creation."

"By recognizing outstanding achievements in IP management, the InKnow Enterprise Award also promotes best practices and sets the benchmark for Hong Kong and Mainland enterprises in their pursuit of excellence," Dr Tam said.

Following an assessment and audit that covers 'invention and innovation', 'product commercialization', 'intellectual property management', as well as 'intellectual property capitalization', six Hong Kong companies were recognized for their excellence in overall IP management.

The winning companies of the 'Innovation Knowledge Enterprise Award 2006' included Aoki Laboratories Ltd, Daka Designs Limited, Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute Company Limited (ASTRI), Jolimark Holdings Limited, Nelson Jewellery Arts Co Ltd and Raymond Industrial Limited.

In addition, five companies were named recipients of the 'Innovation Knowledge Enterprise Award for Promising Performance' for their continuous improvement in IP management. The winning companies included Coming Technologies Limited, Greatworth Industrial Ltd, High Den Enterprises Ltd, Nam Wah Development Limited, and Ngai Leung Electrical Ltd.

Other officiating guests at the ceremony included Dr Stephen Lee, Acting Executive Director of HKPC; Mr Peter Cheung, Deputy Director of Intellectual Property, HKSAR Government; Ms Gracie Sun, Deputy Representative of China, US Chamber of Commerce; Prof W B Lee, Chair Professor and Head of Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering of PolyU; Dr Michael Lam, Executive Director of HKQAA; and Mr Ben Tsang, Director of South China and Hong Kong, Systems and Services Certification, SGS Hong Kong Ltd.

A seminar on the success stories of four winning companies of the 'Innovation Knowledge Enterprise Award 2006' was held after the ceremony, which was attended by 200 representatives from the local and Mainland business community.
