Dongguan International Sci-Tech Cooperation Week to Feature New Inventions and Energy Efficiency Technologies

For the third consecutive year, the Dongguan International Sci-Tech Cooperation Week (DISTC) will be held at the Dongguan International Conference and Exhibition Centre to showcase the advanced science and technology projects from the Guangdong Province. Scheduled for 21 to 24 September 2006, the event is jointly organized by the Dongguan People's Government and the Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province, with the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) as one of the supporting organizations.

At a press briefing in Hong Kong today (19 July 2006), Mr Liang Bing, Deputy Secretary-General of Dongguan City People's Government, said, "The 2006 DISTC aims to encourage innovation and invention for sustainable development. Offering a platform for collaboration in science and technology, the event will feature a series of activities including exhibitions, forums, technology transfer and business matching sessions."

According to Mr Liang, a highlight of the 2006 event will be the concurrent staging of the 16th China Invention Exhibition at the DISTC. He said, "For the first time, the China Invention Exhibition, recognized as the most prestigious event of its kind in China, will be held in Dongguan to showcase a spectrum of new inventions covering the environmental, telecommunications, bio-engineering, and optical sectors, as well as new energy and new materials."

In addition, visitors will be able to see the outstanding entries of the Dongguan Cup International Industrial Design Competition at the Innovative Design Showcase," he said.

A series of four forums on intellectual property, technology transfer, design and innovation, as well as green manufacturing will be organized to facilitate knowledge and experience sharing, enhancing the competitiveness of manufacturers in their move towards high value production.

Mr K K Yeung, Executive Director of HKPC said, "For the past two decades, Hong Kong has been the biggest investor in Dongguan, accounting for 60% of the city's foreign-invested enterprises. Hong Kong manufacturers have helped build Dongguan into the world factory. The synergy between Dongguan and Hong Kong has created a win-win situation for both cities."

"Faced with the challenges of rising production costs, pollution and labour shortage, manufacturers in the Pearl River Delta need to sharpen their competitive edge through innovation, enhanced intellectual property management and the adoption of green manufacturing practices," he said.

"Through our subsidiary company in Dongguan - the Productivity (Dongguan) Consulting Co., Ltd, HKPC strives to assist Hong Kong and Dongguan enterprises to achieve a more effective utilization of resources, enhance the value added content of products and services, and increase their international competitiveness," he said.
