HKPC Develops e-ID Technology to Enhance the Competitiveness of Local Jewellery Industry

To help Hong Kong jewellery industry sustain its leading position in the world, the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) and Hong Kong Jewelry Manufacturers' Association, with funding support from the Innovation and Technology Fund of the HKSAR Government, have jointly developed the world's first jewellery numbering system to ensure that traders, retailers and consumers are correctly informed about every piece of jewellery.

Mr L M Li, General Manager (Manufacturing Technology) of HKPC, said, "Beautiful design and exquisite craftsmanship alone do not suffice to impress today's sophisticated consumers. A piece of jewellery that comes with an internationally recognized permanent label detailing its key data would boost consumers' confidence and enhance the competitiveness of the Hong Kong jewellery industry."

"To meet the needs of the jewellery industry, we have developed a technique to give every piece of jewellery a unique e-ID (electronic identity) by engraving a permanent data matrix on it. The method involves the use of laser micro-engraving technologies and the development of an advanced data encryption/decryption/reading system in compliance with international standards," Mr Li said.

According to Mr Li, a handy reader has also been developed for jewellery manufacturers, traders and retailers to capture the encrypted e-ID into computer system for decryption for quotations, order confirmation and retailing business.

On the key benefits of adopting the e-ID technology, Mr Li said, "With the help from the technology, the jewellery manufacturers will be able to protect the unique e-ID of every piece of their jewellery and avoid leakage of their product information, as well as assure that correct product data are being used during internal and external communications."
