HKPC Launches Training Programme to Enhance the Competitiveness of Local Logistics Industry

To enhance the competitiveness of the local logistics industry through the adoption of technology, the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) will organize a programme entitled “Use of IT and Automation Techniques in Logistics Services”, with funding support from the Hong Kong Logistics Development Council (LOGSCOUNCIL).

Mr Vincent Li, Project Manager of the Programme and General Manager (Enterprise Value and Logistics Consultancy) of HKPC, said, “Driven by globalization and advancement in technology, the transportation and logistics industry has been undergoing transformation into a customer-driven, brand-focus, and integrated solution business.”

He said, “With new market opportunities arising from CEPA and the liberalization of the mainland market as China becomes a WTO member, there are growing needs for world-class supply chain management and logistics services in Hong Kong. To uphold Hong Kong’s position as an international logistics hub, local industry players need to employ state-of-the-art information technologies and automation techniques to provide value-added service along the supply chain.”

“Through this Programme, we hope to enhance the competitiveness of logistics practitioners, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and equip them with the latest information technologies for productivity improvement,” Mr Li said.

To facilitate knowledge and experience sharing on the use of IT and automation techniques in logistics service, the Programme will feature a series of activities including workshops, technology demonstration sessions and forum for logistics operators and business executives of SMEs.

“To cope with the needs of the logistics sector, the workshops and demonstrations will focus on eight technology areas, including Customs Clearance Enabling Technologies with e-Manifest, e-Documentation and DTTN, Fleet Management and GPS, Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) for Manufacturing Technologies and Distribution, Freight Forwarding Management Technology Applications, Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and Enterprise Resources Planning (ERP), Barcoding and RFID Applications, and On-Board Trucker Information System (OBTIS), Wireless Applications and Transport Security,” Mr Li said.

The workshops and technology demonstration sessions will be held on Saturdays and Mondays from 12 August 2006 to 13 January 2007 at the HKPC Building.

“In addition, a one-day forum will be held in March 2007 to provide a platform for logistics professionals from Hong Kong and overseas to share their experience and insight on the latest trends and strategic development in world-class supply chain management,” Mr Li added.
