Hong Kong Pavilion at China Hi-Tech Fair 2006 Opens Today

The Hong Kong Pavilion, jointly organized by the Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC) of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) to showcase the technological achievements of Hong Kong, was officially opened today (12 October 2006) at the China Hi-Tech Fair (CHTF) 2006 held in the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The CHTF is a state-level, international event for the high technology sector held annually in Shenzhen. Hong Kong has participated in the CHTF since its inception in 1999. This year, the Hong Kong Pavilion showcases Hong Kong's strengths in innovation and technology in three zones - 'Hong Kong R&D Centres', 'Hong Kong – City of Innovations' and 'Hong Kong – the Gateway to the World'.

For the first time, a HKPC Technology Gallery and a HKTDC Pavilion have been set up to showcase the latest high technology support services and business matching services offered by the two organizations respectively.

According to Mr Anthony Wong, Commissioner for Innovation and Technology, the HKSAR Government is committed to creating an environment conducive to the development of technology industry and high value-added activities, with a view to developing Hong Kong into a regional innovation and technology service hub.

Highlighting the HKSAR Government’s latest initiatives to further promote the development of innovation and technology, Mr Wong said, "In April 2006, the HKSAR Government established five new Research and Development (R&D) Centres in technology areas where Hong Kong has a competitive edge and has potential for meeting market needs, namely automotive parts and accessory systems; information and communications technologies; nanotechnology and advanced materials; textiles and clothing; and logistics and supply chain management enabling technologies."

"The R&D Centres will provide one-stop services for industry-oriented applied research and facilitate technology transfer and commercialisation. In May and June 2006, together with the Hong Kong Jockey Club Institute of Chinese Medicine (HKJCICM), the R&D Centres participated in a series of seminars and road shows in Guangzhou, Foshan, Shenzhen and Dongguan which were well received by the industry. I believe there is huge potential for collaboration between the R&D Centres and enterprises and research institutes on the Mainland," he said.

At the Hong Kong Pavilion at CHTF 2006, the five R&D Centres and the HKJCICM will introduce their R&D expertise and services, offering opportunities to explore collaboration with Mainland and overseas counterparts.

Visitors will also find HKPC's array of high technology support services at the HKPC Technology Gallery, including micro-fabrication, micro-rapid prototyping, calibration and reliability testing, innovating equipment design and environmental services.

Also on display at the Hong Kong Pavilion are the latest innovations from Hong Kong's high technology companies and HKTDC's business matching service. In addition, a "Hong Kong R&D and Design Showcase" has been set up to present various outstanding R&D projects and winning items from the Hong Kong Young Design Talent Awards, providing a glimpse of the creative and vibrant designs of Hong Kong.

HKTDC is organizing a seminar on "Hong Kong/Shenzhen Collaboration to Foster Commercialisation of Hi-tech Achievements" on 13 October coinciding with the CHTF to explore co-operation opportunities between Hong Kong and Shenzhen in this sector.

The CHTF is the largest event for the high technology sector on the Mainland. It is jointly hosted by the Ministry of Commerce, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Information Industry, the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Personnel, the State Intellectual Property Office, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and the Shenzhen Municipal People's Government, and co-hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture.

The CHTF 2006 is open to the public until 17 October 2006 at the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Centre.
