Jewellery Seminar Presents Dazzling Business Opportunities in the PRD

More than 100 representatives from the local jewellery industry obtained the latest information on business opportunities in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region of the Mainland at a seminar jointly organized by the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) and the China Market Consultancy today (21 April 2006).

Entitled "Brand Building for Hong Kong Jewellery on the Mainland", the Seminar presented the CEPA opportunities and brand building strategies for Hong Kong jewellers, the market and industry trends in the PRD, as well as the latest trade policies of the Mainland on the jewellery industry.

Speaking at the opening, Dr Stephen Lee, Director (Product Productivity) of HKPC, said, "Since 2002, Hong Kong's jewellery exports have surged in both volume and values. Today Hong Kong is the third largest jewellery exporter in the world, with the total exports valued at HK$25.5 billion in 2005 - a robust increase of 23% over 2004."

"Hong Kong jewellery enjoys a high standing on the Mainland, accounting for nine of the top ten brands available in this huge market, of which the PRD makes up 70%. Now, with new opportunities arising from CEPA, Hong Kong jewellery manufacturers can add further lustre to their Mainland business," Dr Lee said.

Other speakers of the Seminar included Mr Yi Jianguo, Deputy Director-General of Trade and Industry Bureau, Government of Luohu District, Shenzhen City; Mr Jiang Shaoqiang, Deputy Director of Government of Liwan District, Guangzhou City; Mr Yang Zhibo of the Government of Huadu District, Guangzhou City; Mr Xu Jinchi, President of Shenzhen Gold & Jewelry Association; Mr Wu Guohui of Hualin International Jewellery Exchange Centre, Liwan; Mr Rudy Ip, Executive Director of CMC Jewellery Consultancy Ltd; and Ms Annie Kong, Acting Manager (CEPA Business Development Centre) of HKPC.

To further assist the local jewellery industry to develop their business on the Mainland, a study mission to Shenzhen, Panyu, Liwan and Huadu in the PRD will be organized from 17 – 19 May 2006. Participants will visit jewellery industrial zones, retail and wholesale marts and jewellery factories in the region, and meet with Government officials and representatives of jewellery industry associations in the PRD.
