Open Day for Magnesium Injection Moulding Demonstration Centre

Hong Kong manufacturers planning to enhance their capabilities in the production of high value magnesium parts will have the opportunity to see the technology demonstration on the Open Day for the Magnesium Injection Moulding Demonstration Centre in Shenzhen on 19 July 2006.

Set up by the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) and the Hong Kong Auto Parts Industry Association with funding support from the Innovation and Technology Fund of the HKSAR Government, the Centre aims to introduce and transfer the latest processing technologies in magnesium injection molding to local manufacturers.

According to Mr L M Li, General Manager (Manufacturing Technology) of HKPC, injection moulding is a one-step environmentally friendly process for shaping high-strength precision components made from magnesium alloys, which are increasingly used in the manufacturing of automotive parts, telecommunications products, consumer electronics, and electrical appliances.

He said, "Magnesium injection moulding can produce extra thin (up to 0.4mm) and intricate magnesium parts. Compared with the conventional method of diecasting, it generates products with higher strength, lower porosity and shrinkage as well as fewer surface imperfections. Unlike diecasting, magnesium injection moulding does not involve the use of environmentally harmful gases."

"On the Centre's Open Day, visitors will be able to see the demonstration on magnesium injection moulding. There will also be presentations on the Centre's facilities, including a special injection molding machine, a high temperature mold temperature controller and a servo-controlled robotic arm for parts unloading. Consultants from HKPC will be on hand to share their experience in applications of the technology," Mr Li said.
