Study Mission Explores Business Opportunities and Technologies of Aircraft Components Industry

To assist local manufacturers to keep abreast of the latest developments and technologies in the aircraft components industry, the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) will organize a study mission to Germany and the UK on 18 to 23 July 2006.

Mr L M Li, General Manager (Manufacturing Technology) of HKPC, said, "The rapidly growing aviation industry on the Mainland has driven up the demand for aircraft components. Local manufacturers planning to engage in high value-adding production should seize this new business opportunity."

He said, "The aircraft components industry is characterized by high technology and high safety requirements. Backed by advanced technologies and excellent quality management systems, Hong Kong's manufacturing sectors are well-positioned to diversify into the production of high value-added aircraft components ahead of their competitors on the Mainland and in Southeast Asia."

"In terms of safety standards, HKPC will offer consultancy and training services to assist local manufacturers to attain the AS9100 international quality management standard for aerospace industry suppliers, as well as the 'airworthiness' certification issued by the Civil Aviation Department," Mr Li added.

"Through this study mission, local manufacturers can keep abreast of the latest market trends and technologies in the aircraft components industry. It will include visits to aircraft components factories in Germany and the UK, as well as the Farnborough International Airshow 2006 in the UK, one of the biggest aerospace events in the world. The British Trade Commission will also organize a business and technology matching session for aviation devices and components manufacturers in the UK and the Hong Kong delegates," he said.

According to Mr Li, local mould manufacturers with precision CNC machining capabilities can diversify into aluminum aircraft parts machining, while the plastics sector can engage in the production of cabin interior parts, including dinner and side boards, sun shields, window frames, and seat cushions. For the metals sector, it can get involved in the manufacturing of metal frames, special aircrafts screws and fasteners, wash basins, and structural parts of the seats. Furthermore, electrical home appliances manufacturers can diversify into the production of cabin pantry modules, passenger seat power supplies and seat belts, while the electronics sector can provide LCD and passenger electronic control systems.
