HKPC Conference Offers Technological Solutions to Blue Sky

More than 130 representatives from the public utilities, manufacturing, environmental and business sectors today (12 January 2007) attended the "Conference on Technological Solution Leading to Blue Sky" organized by the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC).

The Conference is the first in a series of events organized by HKPC to mark the Council's 25 years of green productivity services in Hong Kong.

The opening ceremony was officiated by Ms Anissa Wong Sean Yee, Permanent Secretary for the Environment, Transport and Works (Environment), HKSAR Government, and Mr Wilson Fung, Executive Director of HKPC.

Speaking at the opening, Mr Fung said, "The HKSAR Government attaches great importance to air quality improvement, as witnessed by the prominence attached to the 'Action Blue Sky' Campaign launched recently. In support of the Government's initiative, today's Conference provides a platform for local businesses, environmental sectors and policy makers to address the latest technological solutions to combat air pollution."

Highlighting HKPC's role in promoting environmental management in Hong Kong, Mr Fung said, "A quarter of a century ago, when 'green productivity' was just an emerging phenomenon, HKPC launched Hong Kong's first environmental support service for local businesses. Beginning with mere laboratory testing in early years, our support services have now been broadened to cover a wide spectrum of green manufacturing, waste management, resource conservation and air quality control. Building on our past experience, today we are better equipped than ever to meet the green needs of our business community."

Highlights of the Conference included keynote speeches from Mr W C Mok, Principal Environmental Protection Officer, Environmental Protection Department, HKSAR Government, and Mr Stewart Ballard, Chief Commercial Consul, US Commercial Service, American Consulate General Hong Kong. The former presented the Government's air policy and Action Blue Sky initiative, while the latter gave an update on the Pollution Prevention and Energy Efficiency (P2E2) environmental financing programme launched by the US Commercial Service.

Other topics presented by experts from green technology companies and HKPC at the Conference included the Pilot Cleaner Production Technical Support Project, as well as developments in hybrid vehicle technology, diesel exhaust control technology, Phase Change Material Thermal Energy Storage System, and green lighting.
