International Aviation Safety Management Conference Opens Today

More than 130 representatives from the local and overseas aviation industries today (16 October 2007) attended the opening ceremony of the international conference on "The Complexity of Aviation Safety Management - Putting Ideas into Practice" jointly organized by The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) - Manufacturing and Industrial Engineering Division and Royal Aeronautical Society (Hong Kong Branch) [RAeS(HK)].

The event is part of an 18-month project to enhance the capabilities of local aviation engineers, with funding support from the Professional Services Development Assistance Scheme of the Commerce and Economic Development Bureau of the HKSAR Government. The Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) was commissioned to implement the project which comprises a two-day conference and a series of workshops.

This conference aims to explore the concepts of aviation safety management systems, risk management, human factors and their applications in the unique Asian environment through presentations by experts from the supply chain of the aviation industry such as airline operations, aircraft repair and maintenance and aircraft manufacturing.

Officiating guests at the conference included Ms Eva Cheng, JP, Secretary for Transport and Housing of the HKSAR Government; Dr Lo Wai-kwok, Chairman of HKIE; and Mr Chris Gibbs, Chairman of RAeS(HK).

Representatives from other industries including railway, hospital and nuclear plant operations will also share their experience on safety management at the conference.
