HKCERT Conducts Hong Kong's 1st Cyber Security Drill

Amid a double-digit surge in information security incidents in the first six months of the year, the Hong Kong Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Centre (HKCERT) today (16 July 2009) conducted Hong Kong’s first-ever territory-wide drill to improve the preparedness of the local internet infrastructure.

During the drill, HKCERT, managed by the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC), simulated various scenarios of cyber security attacks which required immediate actions by participating organizations. They included the Hong Kong Police, the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer, and key players in the internet community (Appendix for Full List).

Mr Roy Ko, Principal Consultant (IT Industry Development) of HKPC and Manager of HKCERT, said: “The drill has successfully contained the simulated attacks including those launched by a banking Phishing website and a malware which affects domain name registries. It also tested the incident handling procedures of various parties. Some areas of improvement have already been identified and will be discussed further next week when the participants review the drill in details.”

With “Knocking Down Cyber Attacks” being the theme of the drill, Mr Ko said the exercise has gained extra impetus after 445 cyber security incidents were reported to HKCERT in the first half of this year, up 12 per cent from the same period last year.
