International Symposium Offers Updates on Industrial Design Industry

Local industrial designers, manufacturers and engineers were urged to continuously enhance their creativity in order to seize new business opportunities, according to industry experts at the 6th International Industrial Design Symposium today (15 May 2009).

Jointly organized by the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC), Industrial Designers Society of Hong Kong (IDSHK), and Hong Kong Electrical Appliances Manufacturers Association (HKEAMA), the symposium aims to introduce the latest market trends, business opportunities and challenges of the industrial design industry through presentations by industrial design, cultural and consumer studies experts from Germany, Japan, the Mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Dr Daniel Yip, Council Member of HKPC and Standing Vice-President of HKEAMA, said: "With globalization as well as the current economic downturn, it is important for local industrial designers and industrialists to keep abreast of new development in industrial design and stay ahead of competition. Under the theme of 'Challenges for Industrial Designers Tomorrow', today's symposium provides a timely opportunity for such purpose."

Other officiating guests at the opening ceremony included Mr Christopher Wong, Deputy Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development (Commerce and Industry) of HKSAR Government; Mr Dewitt Chik, President of IDSHK; and Dr Norman Siu, Chairman of Symposium Organizing Committee.

The symposium is part of a 20-month project to enhance the innovative design competencies of local industrial designers and R&D engineers. Comprising a forum in February and a series of professional development training, the project is funded by the Professional Services Development Assistance Scheme of the Commerce and Economic Development Bureau of the HKSAR Government.
