Nanotechnology Applications Reveal New Opportunities

Local manufacturers must be more pro-active in grasping new business opportunities offered by nanotechnology to enhance their competitive edge, according to industry leaders addressing the "International Conference on Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials 2009" which opened today.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Dr Edward Tsui, Chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong Machinery & Metal Industries (FMM) and Conference Chair, said: "Whlist nanotechnology is increasingly acknowledged as a promising technology globally, many local manufacturers are hesitant to deploy it for the production of high valued-added products. With the current economic downturn, it is time for local manufacturers to rethink their position and adopt the technology now before being out-competed by counterparts in the region. I believe nanotechnology is one of the key elements for the strong return of Hong Kong manufacturing."

Other officiating guests at the opening ceremony included Professor Pan Yonghua, Director General of Education, Science and Technology Department of Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in HKSAR; Mrs Rita Lau, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, HKSAR; Mr Jimmy Kwok, Honorary Chairman of the FMM; Mr Wilson Fung, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC); Mr Benjamin Chau, Assistant Executive Director of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC); and Professor Ng Ka-ming, Chief Executive Officer of Nano and Advanced Materials Institute Limited (NAMI).

Under the theme of "The Power of Nano-Alloys & Composites", the three-day conference is organized by the FMM and co-organized by HKPC, HKTDC and NAMI. Speakers at the conference included nanotechnology experts from the United Kingdom, United States of America, Hong Kong, the Mainland and Taiwan.
