The Government announced today (June 12) the appointment of Mr Clement Chen Cheng-jen to succeed Mr Andrew Leung Kwan-yuen as Chairman of the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC).

The appointment was made by the Chief Executive under section 9(1)(a) of the HKPC Ordinance (Cap. 1116). Mr Chen will serve a term of two years with effect from July 1, 2009.

An experienced industrialist, Mr Chen is currently Chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong Industries. The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mrs Rita Lau, welcomed the appointment of Mr Chen as the new Chairman. She said that the HKPC would benefit from Mr Chen’s strong industrial background and commitment towards upgrading local industry.

Mrs Lau also thanked the out-going Chairman, Mr Andrew Leung, for his exemplary service as HKPC Chairman since 2003. Under his capable leadership, the HKPC continued to play an important role in providing integrated support to industry and furthering the economic development of Hong Kong.

“Mr Leung led the HKPC with dedication and commitment. During his term, the HKPC’s services have been expanded to focus more on emerging technologies and the developments in the Pearl River Delta region. Mr Leung has also guided the organisation to rise to the many challenges during his term, including staffing matters. We are greatly indebted to Mr Leung for his strategic guidance and wise counsel,” said Mrs Lau.
