HKPC Upgrades its Testing Service and Facilities to Support the Development of Testing and Certification Industry in Hong Kong

In support of the Hong Kong government’s efforts to develop the local testing and certification industry, the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) will enhance its testing facilities and service, and collaborate with different industries to develop new product standards and accreditation schemes to create more business opportunities for the trade.

At a seminar organized by HKPC on the development potential of testing and certification industry today (25 January 2010), Mr Wilson Fung, Executive Director of HKPC, said: “With more than 10 testing laboratories and technology centres, HKPC not only offers product testing service to manufacturers of different industries but also supports the development of the local testing and certification industry. By leveraging on our advanced testing equipments and professional expertise, privately-operated testing centres can widen their service scope without making additional investment.”

“Assisting different industries to formulate product certification standards and implement accreditation schemes is another key area of HKPC’s support to the testing and certification industry as such initiatives will open up new business opportunities for the industry,” he said.

On HKPC’s plan in support of the industry, Mr Fung said: “HKPC will upgrade the capability of its testing facilities to meet the latest requirements of international product compliance. We will invest over HK$10 million on building a new electromagnetic compatibility testing chamber to meet new international electromagnetic compatibility standards (EN55022:2007) which will come into effect in October 2011, and installing new equipments for our Reliability Testing Centre. Apart from regulatory compliance, these initiatives will enhance capabilities of local manufacturers in the development of high precision products such as automobile electronics, railway and medical equipments.

“HKPC will work closely with different industries to formulate voluntary product certification schemes, creating more business opportunities for the local testing and certification industry. We will also promote local testing and certification services to the Mainland through our network in the Pearl River Delta region.”

At today’s seminar, Professor Ching Pak-chung, Chairman of the Hong Kong Council for Testing and Certification, shared his insights on testing and certification in Hong Kong. Other presentations included new testing technologies as well as experience sharing by representatives of watch and clock and gold industries.
