HKCERT leads Asia-Pacific Drill to Combat Organized Cyber Attacks

Under the leadership of the Hong Kong Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Centre (HKCERT) of the Hong Kong Productivity Council, 16 cyber security bodies in the Asia Pacific successfully achieved their targets in a drill (28 January 2010) to combat organized cyber attacks, said Mr Roy Ko, Manager of HKCERT.

With “Fighting Cyber Crimes with Financial Incentives” being the theme of the sixth drill organized by the Asia Pacific Computer Emergency Response Team (APCERT) members, HKCERT, Chair of APCERT, was the driving force for this biggest drill of the region. During the drill, simulated attacks by a banking Phishing website and a malware that affected domain name registries were launched which required immediate actions by the drill participants.

Mr Ko said: “The popularization of online business has created a profitable revenue stream for the cyber criminals. They use botnets (network of zombie computers) to obtain login credentials, host phishing site, and launch distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks to commit cyber thefts.”

“The drill timely tested the readiness of the participants in combating organized malicious cyber attacks, enabling us to share information and experience on cross-border incident handling and response coordination,” he added.

The exercise took place across five time zones and involved 16 teams representing 14 economies in the Asia Pacific regions, namely Australia, Brunei, the mainland China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam.
