HKPC Urges IT Practitioners to Seize Opportunities in Software Testing

IT practitioners should strengthen their expertise in software testing in order to tap new business opportunities accompanying the HKSAR government’s strategy to develop the local testing and certification industry, said Mr Wilson Fung, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC).

Addressing the “Hong Kong Software Quality Assurance (HKSQA) Conference” organized by HKPC today (17 March 2010), Mr Fung said: “Based on international experience, a software developer typically spends, on average, up to 20 per cent of its total project cost on testing and another three to five per cent on quality assurance. If these statistics are anything to go by, the business potential for IT practitioners in software testing and quality assurance in the future would be enormous.”

On HKPC’s plan in support of the industry, Mr Fung said: “Over the years, HKPC has provided consultancy services in improving software process quality, such as CMMI and ISO 9001. We also worked with international bodies to help local IT practitioners attain professional certification, such as CSQA and CSTE. We have most recently received increasing requests from the IT industry in the area of new software products certification. Building on this wealth of experience, HKPC is now exploring with professional bodies and local industry the feasibility of developing a software product certification scheme in Hong Kong.”

“HKPC has just unveiled our revamped website recently and it will be further enriched with the hyperlink to another new website, to be launched momentarily, that is dedicated to providing information related to software quality to help the local industry raise the overall standard in software development,” he added.

Under the theme of “Software Assessment and Certification”, the Conference featured a keynote presentation by Mr John Hung, Secretary-General of the Hong Kong Council for Testing and Certification, on the work plan of the council in relations to software testing. Other officiating guest at the opening of the Conference included the Hon Dr Samson Tam, Legislative Council Member.
