Take Collaborative Action Against Worsening Cyber Attacks, HKPC Urged

An alarming surge in active hacking and phishing attacks resulting from the rise of new internet technologies has sparked calls for collaborative efforts to combat cyber security threats.

Speaking at the opening of the “Information Security Summit 2010” today (17 November 2010), Mrs Agnes Mak, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC), issued the warning after 579 active hacking and phishing cases were reported to the HKPC-managed Hong Kong Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Centre (HKCERT) in the first 10 months of this year, up 34 per cent from the same period last year.

Mrs Mak said, “With the popularization of new internet technologies such as cloud computing and mobile apps for smartphones, such cases set to go up further. To curb these attacks, collaborative efforts of the Government, information security professionals and the community at large are required.”

“With a decade of experience in managing HKCERT and tackling information security issues, HKPC is well positioned to support the Government and to coordinate with various vendors and security organizations locally and overseas in order to proactively detect and combat potential security threats.”

Under the theme of “Cloud and Mobile Security in a Blurred Perimeter Environment”, the Summit is jointly hosted by HKPC and eight information security bodies.

Other officiating guests at the opening ceremony included Mr Eric Lam, Assistant Director (Support Branch), Office of the Telecommunications Authority of HKSAR Government, and Mr Dale Johnstone, Chairman of the Summit’s organizing committee.
