CSA Group & HKPC Launch Greenhouse Gas Management Training and Certification in Hong Kong

Hong Kong, November 19, 2010 – CSA Group and the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) today officially announced the launch of a series of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) training programs based on the internationally recognized ISO 14064 series of GHG measurement and reporting standards - the first of their kind in Hong Kong. CSA Group, established in 1919, is an independent, not-for-profit association which promotes the use of cleaner technologies by businesses in the energy, infrastructure, and transportation sectors, and led the development of the ISO 14064 GHG standards as secretariat to ISO Technical Committee 207 responsible for developing globally recognized environmental standards.

Comprising of three training courses to be introduced in early 2011, the new programs include: “Measuring Your Organization’s Carbon Footprint ISO 14064-1 Essentials”, targeting professionals who compile information on carbon footprints – also known as ‘GHG inventories’– for their organizations or clients; “Reducing Your Organizational Environmental Impact ISO 14064-2 Essentials”, for professionals who help organizations measure GHG reductions; and “Greenhouse Gas Verification Using ISO 14064-3”, for professionals who verify GHG inventories or projects.

“We believe these courses herald an exciting opportunity for businesses in Hong Kong to position themselves as leaders in addressing climate change issues,” said Ash Sahi, president and CEO, CSA Group. “Organizations can take action now to help mitigate the extent of climate change and should be encouraged to gain the technical knowledge they need to help reduce their environmental impact. These courses will provide organizations with concrete measures wishing to monitor, reduce and verify their carbon emissions that are in accordance with internationally accepted standards.”

Commenting on the collaboration, Joseph Poon, Director (Technology Development) of HKPC, said, “As an industry support organization, HKPC is actively developing and providing solutions to support various sectors in building a low carbon economy and creating a greener environment. With CSA Group’s expertise and HKPC’s experience and industry network in Hong Kong and the Mainland, I am confident that this strategic alliance will mark a milestone in the enhancement of the professionalism of Hong Kong in GHG management, as well as the adoption of low carbon strategies by businesses and the community at large.”

The training program aims to help establish a pool of professionals who are trained in the applicable international protocols and standards, and are able to help businesses meet international best practices on GHG monitoring and reduction. As well as ISO 14064, the courses cover the GHG Protocol document developed by WRI (World Resources Institute) and WBCSD (World Business Council on Sustainable Development).

CSA also certifies individual professionals as GHG Inventory Quantifiers and GHG Verifiers through an assessment of their experience, competencies and technical knowledge. After certification, individuals will be recognized internationally as certified professionals in GHG quantification and verification, presenting an attractive career development opportunity for environmental practitioners.
These CSA courses are in high demand in North America and throughout the world.
