Raising the Standard for EMC Testing with New Chamber at HKPC

Local electronic and electrical appliance industries are braced for the implementation of a mandatory international product testing standard, to be effective in October 2011, with the opening of the Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Chamber of the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC).

The multi-functional EMC chamber, built with a HKSAR Government funding of HK$ 9.9 million, enables manufacturers to conduct product tests locally, which will shorten the product development cycle and raise their international competitiveness.

Professor Ching Pak-chung, Chairman of the Hong Kong Council for Testing and Certification, and Miss Janet Wong, Commissioner for Innovation and Technology, today (25 August 2011) joined HKPC Chairman, Mr Clement Chen, and Executive Director, Mrs Agnes Mak, to officiate the opening of the new chamber.

Mr Chen said, “The establishment of this new chamber is a major industry support initiative of HKPC in 2011. As electronic products operate at ever-higher frequency and with more functions, the EMC testing requirements become more stringent as well. Both the industry and HKPC need to upgrade our facilities to provide relevant testing services.”

“The new chamber is the only EMC testing facility in Hong Kong that caters to large-scale electronics systems. Its multi-functional design can facilitate local manufacturers’ IT products to attain compliance with the EU’s new mandatory EN55022 EMC testing standard. For local testing and certification bodies, through facility sharing, they can improve their service efficiency without heavy investments. The electronics industry can thus shorten the development cycle for high-end electronic products. I trust that both the local testing and certification, and electronic industries will gain in competitive advantages,” he added.

Occupying an area of over 185 m2, the new chamber is the second large-scale testing facility in the EMC Centre of HKPC. Equipped with advanced facilities, it not only meets the latest EMC testing requirements for IT products but can also strengthen the local testing competence to address EMC issues in wireless communication systems, medical and healthcare devices, automotive parts and railway systems such as platform screen doors, automatic gates, telecommunication systems, etc.
