WTIA and HKPC Launch Smartphone Security E-guidebook for SMEs

To assist SMEs to enhance information security on smartphones, the Hong Kong Wireless Technology Industry Association (WTIA) and Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) jointly compiled an e-guidebook on smartphone security featuring expert advice and a template to facilitate SMEs in formulating policies on the safe use of these devices.

At a seminar to launch the e-guidebook today (19 March 2012), Dr Lawrence Cheung, Vice Chairman of WTIA and Principal Consultant (IT Industry Development) of HKPC, said, “Smartphones are ubiquitous, with popularity growing rapidly. A US IT market study has forecasted smartphones to replace computer as the most commonly used device for internet connection in the world by 2013. Though enterprises will be affected by information security vulnerabilities in smartphones, many SMEs remain low in their security awareness. They should enhance their knowledge and adopt measures to avoid or mitigate the risks.”

Miss Jessica Nan, Senior Consultant (IT Industry Development) of HKPC, said, “The e-guidebook includes recommendations and best practices on the use of smartphones by information security experts, Apps developers, mobile network operators and security tool providers. There is also a template for SMEs to conduct security evaluation, facilitating them in formulating policies on the use of such devices at work.”

The e-guidebook is a major initiative of a programme on “The Promotion of Awareness in Smartphone Information Security” funded by the SME Development Fund of the Trade and Industry Department. The programme also includes short videos of case studies for social media, an interactive e-learning platform and seminars.
