HKPC Calls for Adopting Software Measurement in IT Projects

IT practitioners are urged to place greater emphasis on software measurement in ensuring effective project planning and control, Mrs Agnes Mak, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC), told the “Hong Kong Software Quality Assurance (HKSQA) Conference 2012”.

Under the theme of “Managing with Facts”, the Conference was opened by Mr Daniel Lai, Government Chief Information Officer of the HKSAR, today (18 April 2012).

Mrs Mak said, “Software development projects are often prone to inaccurate schedule and cost estimates, poor software quality, and low productivity, resulting in customer dissatisfaction. Improving the situation requires better software planning and control. To this end, it is essential to adopt regular and systematic software measurement.”

She continued, “A well-defined measurement programme can help better manage and control the project life cycle activities and the end-products, as well as project risks evaluation and control. It can also identify the weaknesses of the software development process and the opportunities for improvement.”

Staged annually since 2009, the HKSQA Conference is one of HKPC’s programmes to promote awareness of software quality assurance in Hong Kong. It comprises a seminar featuring presentations from local and overseas software engineering experts and technical workshops on latest software assessment and certification techniques.

Other HKPC initiatives include consultancy on software quality qualifications and training, quality improvement schemes, setting up best practices and a HKSQA Resource Centre website (www.hksqa.org).
